Pictures from Mars — and now what?

On February 18th 2021 at 20:55 GMT, the NASA Perseverance Rover landed on Mars. No doubt a spectacular event and proof of what we humans are able to achieve, if we put our head into something. A couple of days later the first images and videos reached the earth. Take a look below and enjoy the beauty of the red planet.

We at Alba Yoga took some time and reflected on what these pictures mean to us. As you may know there are a couple of people out there who think that the only way to save the human race from extinction here on earth is to colonize Mars. Elon Musk is most likely the most famous public figure sharing this opinion. Not only is he convinced that escaping from earth is the only option, he also puts his thoughts into action and invests heavily into his company SpaceX, whose ultimate goal is precisely to populate Mars! But how welcoming is Mars actually for us to live there? Just to give you a glance on what to expect, take a look at the comparison of the atmospheres of Mars and earth below.

Comparing atmospheres of earth and mars

You probably have noticed that there is no oxygen on Mars. Mmmh, not so good.
How about the temperature on Mars? Chilling -64°C all year — don’t forget to bring a warm jacket!
Right then … how about water? Well, there is water on Mars but of course it is all frozen.
Summing up:
  • We cannot breath
  • It is freezing cold
  • No simple access to water
  • No food
  • The list goes on and on ...

Probably you noticed that we tend to be a little bit sarcastic on this matter, and the reason for this is quite simple.
Mars is a dead planet. Instead of behaving like a parasite (we just finished watching the Matrix trilogy again :D) and simply leaving our host (aka planet earth) whenever all natural resources have run out, we should hold ourselves accountable for life on this planet.

Keeping earth habitable must be the goal number one for all of us.

At Alba Yoga we are trying to set up an example towards this. Sustainability is what drives us. For further reading also take a look at our Sustainability page.

P.S. we very much appreciate all the outstanding work done by NASA and SpaceX, giving us a different perspective of our planet. Keep up the good work!
